Since 2005 it is now really easy to get to Koh Tao. You can drive with one of the high speed catamaran boats. You can also arrive from one of the neighboring islands (Koh Phangan or Koh Samui).
Diving in and around Koh Tao's beautiful coral reefs is the islands main attraction. Resorts on Koh Tao offer a wide range of accommodation to fit most budgets.
Traveling around the island and visiting other beaches and bays pretty easy.. Just off the concrete main road you have to be careful when driving on dirty roads. Pick -ups and taxies can be found almost everywhere.
From the days of begining it used to be a prison island, through to today's re-development, the island has keept it's sparkle, though it now caters for everybody´s tastes and expeniture.
Around 1947 the first settlers laid claim to a large part of land on what is today called as Sairee Beach. These were the twin brothers Khun Ueam and Khun Oh who reached KoTao by boat from the next island of Koh Panghan, Koh Tao was still under Royal Patronage in those days but it didn´t prevent those first settlers from claiming their stake of land. The very first generation of today's community (began, started] settling when they brought their families and began to harvest and cultivate the on offer. Despite Ko Tao still being under Royal Patronage, plots of land were claimed, and cleared for coconut plantations. You will still see lots of evidence of the large plantations all over the island. The first settlers lives consisted of harvesting coconuts, growing vegetables & fruit and of course sustaining themselves through fishing.
On the 18th of june 1899, His Majesty the King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5 1868-1910) visited KoTao and left his monogram as evidence on a big rock at Jor Por Ror Bay (near, next to] Sairee Beach. This rock is honoured even today and get treated with the greatest of respect.
Ko Tao is little, 21 square km and 50% of that too steep to access. Koh Tao is surrounded by a lot sharks too, nice 'non-human-eating' ones fortunately. And yes, you can still snorkel with sharks, and perhaps the odd turtle as well, just check out our web site for all the local dive shops available.
